What this covers
JCQ results are published on Thursday 13 August 2026. Most guidance written for that morning deals with what the options are. This piece deals with something narrower: the order the morning actually runs in, what can be done at which hour, and which actions cannot be undone.
The gap it addresses is a practical one. Results are released at 08:00, but a Clearing choice cannot be added until 13:00. Those five hours exist, they are usable, and most students do not know they are there.
Scope: every timing here is UCAS, so it applies to applications to UK universities. Scottish results were published on 4 August and ran to a different clock. International Baccalaureate results were published on 6 July. Students holding IB or other results who are applying through UCAS follow the same 13 August confirmation timings as everyone else.
The clock on 13 August

The five hours in the middle are for information, because they cannot be used for anything else. Vacancies have been listed in the UCAS search tool since 2 July, and that list is the only official one.
If the place has not been confirmed
An application that still reads as conditional at 08:00 has not been refused. UCAS sets out three checks before anything else is done.
- Check the application itself for the reason it is pending. A university may be waiting on missing information, such as Level 3 results it has not received.
- Look for direct contact from the university. If none has arrived, telephone them. A place may still be under review even where the required grades were not met.
- Only after those two steps does the question of applying elsewhere arise.
The button that cannot be undone
An applicant holding an unconditional firm place can release themselves using 'Decline my place'. It is worth being precise about what it does, because it is the one action on results day that is difficult to reverse.
- The place is declined and the contract with the university is cancelled.
- The insurance choice goes as well. Declining the firm place moves the applicant into Clearing. Anyone who wants the insurance place should telephone that university first and ask whether they will accept them, before declining anything.
- Accommodation and scholarship arrangements attached to the place are cancelled with it.
- Where the firm place is still conditional, release is not a button. It is a request to UCAS, available from 08:00 on 13 August until 2 September, and it also gives up both the firm and the insurance choice.
UCAS advice on declining by accident is to telephone the university immediately, while noting that the place may already have been offered to someone else. To swap course at the same university, speak to the university rather than using the button.
What to have ready before telephoning
A university cannot look up an applicant without two numbers, both of which are in the application: the Clearing number and the Personal ID. Alongside those, have the results themselves and two or three courses that would be acceptable, so that more than one call can be made in the same morning.
Informal offers can be collected from several universities before choosing between them. Only one Clearing choice can be added at a time, and adding it counts as firmly accepting that offer. If the university does not confirm, another choice can be added.
Applicants who are unplaced also get a 'My matches' button in their application, listing up to fifty matched courses that can be flagged as of interest, after which universities with vacancies may telephone them.
The dates after tomorrow
Results day is not a deadline. Clearing runs from 2 July to 19 October 2026, and the dates that follow matter more than the first morning.
- 20 August: GCSE results. Applicants with outstanding GCSE results send them directly to their universities.
- 2 September: remaining offer conditions must be met, and the last date for the 'Decline my place' button.
- 24 September: last date for UCAS to receive 2026 applications.
- 19 October: last date to add a Clearing choice. Universities have until 21 October to decide.
In England, the Exam Results Helpline runs from 13 to 28 August on 0800 100 900, 08:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and 10:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays, staffed by qualified careers advisers.
